Background
The protein encoded by this gene is a peptidyl-tRNA hydrolase and a vital component of the large mitochondrial ribosome. It serves as a ribosome release factor for the ribosome that translates mitochondrial genes. This protein may degrade prematurely terminated polypeptides and help reuse stalled ribosomes. Two transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been identified for this gene. (RefSeq, Dec 2014)
