Background
The protein encoded by this gene is a member of the keratin gene family. The type II cytokeratins consist of basic or neutral proteins that form heterotypic keratin pairs coexpressed during differentiation of epithelial tissues. Multiple type II cytokeratins (KRT6) have been identified due to gene duplication events. These genes are expressed with KRT16 and/or KRT17 in the tongue filiform papillae, oral mucosa, esophagus, hair follicle sheath, and glandular epithelia. Mutations are associated with pachyonychia congenita. Type II cytokeratins are clustered in chromosome region 12q12–q13. [RefSeq, Jul 2008]
