Specificity Comments:
Pulmonary surfactant lowers the surface tension at the air–liquid interface in the alveoli, essential for normal respiration. It is a mixture of phospholipids and four surfactant-associated proteins (SP-A, SP-B, SP-C, SP-D).
SP-B and SP-C are hydrophobic proteins that associate with lipids to promote surfactant absorption and reduce surface tension.
SP-A and SP-D are calcium-dependent lectins (Collectins) that contribute to innate immunity, binding to bacterial cell wall lipids and aiding microbial clearance.

Target Information

Surfactant protein D (SP-D) is synthesized and secreted by lung epithelial cells. It belongs to group III of the C-type lectin family, characterized by multiple globular head regions linked by triple-helical, collagen-like strands.
This group includes SP-A, mannan-binding protein, conglutinin, and collectin-43, which bind to the C1q receptor on various cells.
SP-D and SP-A enhance oxygen radical production by alveolar macrophages.
