Target Information
CD14 is a 55 kDa GPI-anchored glycoprotein constitutively expressed on mature monocytes, macrophages, and neutrophils. It functions as a multifunctional lipopolysaccharide receptor and exists both as a membrane-bound and soluble form. CD14 binds lipopolysaccharide (LPS) in a reaction catalyzed by lipopolysaccharide-binding protein (LBP). The soluble form (sCD14) can distinguish subtle structural differences among LPS molecules and plays a role in neutralizing serum lipopolysaccharides. CD14 also binds apoptotic cells and is involved in allergic, inflammatory, and infectious processes. Alternative splicing produces multiple transcript variants encoding the same isoform. CD14 dysfunction has been associated with Mycobacterium chelonae infection and croup.
