Target Information
Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and function in protein synthesis within the mitochondrion. Mitochondrial ribosomes (mitoribosomes) consist of a small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit, with an estimated 75% protein to rRNA composition—opposite to that of prokaryotic ribosomes. Prokaryotic ribosomes contain a 5S rRNA, which mammalian mitoribosomes lack. Among species, mitoribosomal proteins vary significantly in sequence and biochemical properties, making sequence homology identification difficult. The MRPL3 gene encodes a 39S subunit protein of the L3P ribosomal protein family, with a pseudogene located on chromosome 13q.
