Target Information
Matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) family proteins are involved in the breakdown of extracellular matrix in normal physiological processes such as embryonic development, reproduction, and tissue remodeling, as well as in disease processes including arthritis and metastasis. Most MMPs are secreted as inactive proproteins that are activated upon cleavage by extracellular proteinases.
The enzyme encoded by the MMP7 gene degrades proteoglycans, fibronectin, elastin, and casein, and differs from most other MMPs in lacking a conserved C-terminal domain. It plays roles in wound healing and regulation of defensin activity in intestinal mucosa. The gene is part of an MMP cluster localized to chromosome 11q22.3.
