Alkaline phosphatase (ALPL) is a homodimeric enzyme (~86 kDa) containing two zinc atoms per monomer, essential for its catalytic activity. It functions optimally at alkaline pH and is found in both prokaryotes and eukaryotes. ALP plays a critical role in liver metabolism and skeletal development. In bacteria, it serves as a source of inorganic phosphate, while in yeast, it aids in studying membrane protein sorting.
