Target Information
HBA2 is located on chromosome 16 and spans approximately 30 kb, including seven loci: 5′-zeta–pseudozeta–mu–pseudoalpha-1–alpha-2–alpha-1–theta–3′.
The alpha-2 (HBA2) and alpha-1 (HBA1) coding sequences are identical, differing slightly in untranslated regions and introns.
Two alpha chains and two beta chains form HbA, which constitutes ~97% of adult hemoglobin. Alpha chains also combine with delta chains to form HbA2, and with gamma chains to form HbF.
Alpha thalassemias result from deletions or mutations in HBA2 and HBA1 genes.
