Background
Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and participate in protein synthesis within the mitochondrion. Mitochondrial ribosomes (mitoribosomes) consist of a small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit, with approximately 75% protein to rRNA composition—opposite to prokaryotic ribosomes. Unlike prokaryotic ribosomes, mammalian mitoribosomes lack a 5S rRNA. The proteins of the mitoribosome vary significantly among species, affecting sequence and biochemical properties. This gene encodes a 39S subunit protein and overlaps with the semaphorin class 4 protein gene (SEMA4G) at map location 10q24.31, transcribed in opposite directions. Sequence analysis identified multiple transcript variants encoding distinct isoforms.
