| Cellular Localization | Nucleus, Cytoplasm. Nucleocytoplasmic shuttling occurs via interactions with circadian core oscillator proteins and phosphorylation. PER1 retention in the cytoplasm occurs through PER1–PER2 heterodimer formation. Translocates to the nucleus after phosphorylation by CSNK1D or CSNK1E, or by CRY1/CRY2 interaction (By similarity). |

Background
This gene belongs to the Period family and is expressed in a circadian pattern in the suprachiasmatic nucleus, the primary circadian pacemaker in the mammalian brain. It encodes components involved in circadian rhythms of locomotor activity, metabolism, and behavior. Upregulated by CLOCK/ARNTL heterodimers, it represses this activation via PER/CRY heterodimers interacting with CLOCK/ARNTL. Polymorphisms in this gene may increase cancer risk. Alternative splicing has been observed but not fully characterized.
