Target Information
This gene encodes a member of the carboxylesterase large family. Members of this family hydrolyze or transesterify various xenobiotics (e.g., cocaine, heroin) and endogenous substrates with ester, thioester, or amide bonds. They may be involved in fatty acyl and cholesterol ester metabolism and play a role in the blood-brain barrier system. This enzyme is a major liver enzyme responsible for drug clearance in the liver. Mutations in this gene cause carboxylesterase 1 deficiency. Three transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been identified.
