Target Information
Secretory carrier membrane proteins (SCAMPs) are components of post-Golgi membranes involved in membrane trafficking. In fibroblasts, SCAMPs are concentrated in compartments responsible for recycling of cell surface receptors and endocytosis. In neurons, SCAMPs associate with synaptic vesicles, secretion granules, and transporter vesicles.
SCAMPs possess four central transmembrane regions and a cytoplasmic tail. Of the five known SCAMPs, SCAMPs 1–3 contain cytoplasmic N-terminal regions with NPF repeats, which interact with EH domain proteins functioning in vesicle budding from the plasma membrane or Golgi complex. SCAMPs 4 and 5 lack these NPF repeats. SCAMPs 1–4 are ubiquitously expressed, while SCAMP 5 is brain-specific and expressed late in development, coinciding with mature synapse expansion.
