Target Information

Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and are essential for protein synthesis within mitochondria. Mitochondrial ribosomes (mitoribosomes) consist of a small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit, with approximately 75% protein to rRNA ratio, unlike prokaryotic ribosomes where this ratio is reversed.
Mammalian mitoribosomes lack a 5S rRNA, and the protein composition varies significantly across species, making sequence homology recognition difficult. The RT28 gene encodes a 28S subunit protein, also known as mitochondrial ribosomal protein S35.
