Target Information
The protein encoded by this gene is part of the ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporter superfamily. ABC proteins mediate transport of diverse molecules across cellular membranes and are grouped into seven subfamilies. SUR1 belongs to the MRP subfamily, associated with multidrug resistance. It modulates ATP-sensitive potassium channels and insulin release. Mutations in this gene are linked to hyperinsulinemic hypoglycemia of infancy and non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus type II. Alternative splicing has been observed but not fully characterized.
