Target Information
The membrane-associated protein encoded by this gene is a member of the ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporter superfamily. ABC proteins transport various molecules across extra- and intra-cellular membranes and are divided into seven distinct subfamilies (ABC1, MDR/TAP, MRP, ALD, OABP, GCN20, White). TAP1 belongs to the MDR/TAP subfamily, which is associated with multidrug resistance. TAP1 is involved in transporting degraded cytosolic peptides into the endoplasmic reticulum for assembly with class I molecules. Mutations in this gene may be linked to ankylosing spondylitis, insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus, and celiac disease.
