Target Information

The biological actions of insulin and IGF-1 are mediated by their respective cell surface receptor tyrosine kinases that regulate multiple signaling pathways through phosphorylation cascades. Binding of insulin or IGF-1 to their receptors induces autophosphorylation and activation of downstream targets. Although structurally related, these receptors differ in ligand specificity and intracellular signaling domains, leading to distinct biological outcomes. Defects in the insulin receptor (IR) are associated with insulin resistance syndromes, while IGF-1 receptor (IGF-1R) alterations may cause growth retardation. Both pathways are also implicated in cancer development.
