Target Information
Probably functions as cargo-recognition protein that couples cytoplasmic vesicles to the transport machinery. Plays a role in hair pigmentation, involving shedding of melanosome-containing vesicles from melanocytes and phagocytosis by keratinocytes.
Functions on melanosomes as receptor for RILP and the RILP–DCTN1 complex, contributing to retrograde melanosome transport. Overexpression leads to accumulation of late endosomes/lysosomes at the microtubule organizing center (MTOC).
Binds cholesterol and phosphatidylinositol phosphates (3P, 4P, 5P, 3,5-bisP), but not 3,4-bisP or 4,5-bisP. Required for normal phagosome clearing, lysosomal enzyme activation, and degradation of A2E in the eye. May regulate membrane fusion and disk membrane biogenesis in photoreceptor rod cells. [UniProt]
