Target Information
BCL-2 is a key regulator of apoptosis, functioning to inhibit or promote cell death. Members of the BCL-2 family form dimers to modulate apoptosis.
- Bag1 forms a heterodimer with BCL-2, enhancing its anti-apoptotic effect.
- Bax and Bak promote cytochrome c release from mitochondria to initiate apoptosis.
- Overexpression of BCL-2, such as through translocation to the Ig heavy chain locus, is associated with follicular lymphoma and other cancers.
Two transcript variants of BCL-2 differ in their C-terminal ends, and high levels of BCL-2 alpha protein are typically found in neoplastic germinal centers of follicular lymphomas.
