Target Information

Voltage-sensitive calcium channels mediate calcium entry into excitable cells and play a key role in neurotransmitter release and excitation-contraction (E-C) coupling.
The 1,4-dihydropyridines (DHPs) identify L-type calcium channels found in vertebrate muscle, neuronal, and neuroendocrine cells.
The DHP receptor, part of the L-type calcium channel complex, acts as the voltage sensor in E-C coupling and is composed of at least four subunits.
The alpha-1 subunit binds DHPs and shows high sequence homology to voltage-gated sodium channels.
The alpha-2 subunit is a large glycoprotein found in skeletal and cardiac muscle, brain, and other excitable tissues.
Additional beta and gamma subunits co-purify with the DHP receptor.
