Target Information
SPTAN1 (spectrin alpha chain, non-erythrocytic 1) belongs to the spectrin family of filamentous cytoskeletal proteins. These proteins act as essential scaffolds that stabilize the plasma membrane and organize intracellular organelles. Spectrins form alpha and beta dimers that associate into tetramers arranged head-to-head. SPTAN1 is also involved in DNA repair and cell cycle regulation. Mutations in this gene cause early infantile epileptic encephalopathy-5. Multiple transcript variants result from alternative splicing.
