Target Information
This gene encodes the large subunit of DNA damage-binding protein, which forms a heterodimer with a small subunit and functions in nucleotide-excision repair. Defective activity of this protein is associated with xeroderma pigmentosum complementation group E (XPE). Mutation analysis is required to confirm whether the defect in XPE patients lies within this gene or the gene encoding the small subunit. Additionally, Best vitelliform macular dystrophy maps to the same region (11q), but no sequence alterations of this gene have been demonstrated in Best disease patients.
