Target Information
This gene encodes glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD), a cytosolic enzyme encoded by a housekeeping X-linked gene. Its main function is to produce NADPH, a key electron donor in defense against oxidative stress and in reductive biosynthetic reactions.
G6PD exhibits significant genetic diversity, with many variants arising from missense mutations that result in different enzyme activity levels and clinical symptoms.
Deficiency in G6PD can lead to neonatal jaundice, acute hemolysis, or chronic non-spherocytic hemolytic anemia. Two transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been identified.
