Target Information
ASCL1 (also known as ASH1) is a basic helix-loop-helix transcription factor required for early nervous system development. It is expressed in the fetal brain and is essential for the development and survival of subsets of autonomic neurons. ASCL1 interacts with MEF-2A to regulate gene expression critical for neuronal circuit formation in the central nervous system.
High ASCL1 expression is observed in neuroendocrine tumors such as medullary thyroid cancer, small cell lung cancer, and other lung cancers with neuroendocrine features, making it a useful marker for such cancers.
The ASCL1 gene maps to human chromosome 12 and contains a trinucleotide repeat region, which may be associated with inherited diseases.
