Target Information
ME2 encodes a mitochondrial NAD-dependent malic enzyme, a homotetrameric protein that catalyzes the oxidative decarboxylation of malate to pyruvate. It was previously weakly linked to Friedreich ataxia, later shown to be caused by a different gene. Certain SNP haplotypes of this gene may increase the risk for idiopathic generalized epilepsy. Alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been found for this gene.
