Target Information
Proteins that directly bind to nascent RNA polymerase II transcripts, the heterogeneous nuclear ribonucleoproteins (hnRNPs), play an important role in transcript-specific packaging and alternative splicing of pre-mRNAs.
The M1–M4 proteins form a cluster of four abundant hnRNPs that bind pre-mRNA in vivo and poly(G)/poly(U) RNA homopolymers in vitro.
They belong to the ribonucleoprotein consensus sequence family and possess an MR repeat motif similar to that in the 64 kDa subunit of cleavage stimulation factor involved in pre-mRNA 3'-end maturation.
Proteins immunologically related to M are found in diverse eukaryotes from human to yeast.
