Target Information

DNA-binding protein SATB2 binds to DNA at nuclear matrix- or scaffold-associated regions and recognizes the sugar-phosphate structure of double-stranded DNA.
It functions as a transcription factor controlling nuclear gene expression by binding to matrix attachment regions (MARs) of DNA and inducing local chromatin-loop remodeling.
SATB2 also acts as a docking site for chromatin remodeling enzymes by recruiting corepressors (HDACs) or coactivators (HATs) directly to promoters and enhancers.
It is required for the initiation of upper-layer neuron (UL1) specific genetic programs and for the inactivation of deep-layer (DL) and UL2 specific genes, likely via modulation of BCL11B expression.
SATB2 serves as a repressor of Ctip2 and a regulatory determinant of corticocortical connections in the developing cerebral cortex.
Mutations in the SATB2 gene are associated with isolated cleft palate (CPI).
