NEU1은 리소좀 효소로, 당단백질 및 당지질과 같은 기질의 말단 시알산 잔기를 절단합니다. 리소좀 내에서 이 효소는 β-갈락토시다아제 및 카텝신 A(‘protective protein’)와 함께 이형삼합체 복합체를 형성합니다.
NEU1 유전자의 돌연변이는 시알리도시스(sialidosis)를 유발할 수 있습니다.
