Target Information
NFS1 (Nitrogen Fixation 1), also known as NIFS or IscS (cysteine desulfurase), belongs to the class V pyridoxal-phosphate-dependent aminotransferase family.
It localizes to the cytoplasm or mitochondrion depending on cytosolic pH.
Highest expression levels are found in heart and skeletal muscle, with lower expression in liver, brain, and pancreas.
NFS1 catalyzes the removal of sulfur from cysteine to form alanine, providing inorganic sulfur for iron-sulfur (Fe-S) clusters.
Fe-S clusters are essential cofactors in various biological processes, including:
- Electron transfer in oxidative phosphorylation
- Enzymatic catalysis in aconitase and dehydratases
- Structural maintenance of DNA repair enzyme endonuclease III
