Target Information
CD44 is a 100 kDa type 1 transmembrane glycoprotein widely expressed on human leukocytes, white matter of the brain, and some epithelial cells of the intestine and breast.
It acts as a receptor for hyaluronic acid (HA) and is involved in cell-cell interactions, adhesion, and migration.
CD44 participates in lymphocyte activation, recirculation, and homing, and may be upregulated in certain carcinomas related to metastatic potential.
It is expressed by hematopoietic and non-hematopoietic cells, epithelial tissues, and filopodia in cultured keratinocytes.
Alternative splicing generates multiple isoforms with distinct functions.
Diseases associated with CD44 dysfunction include superficial keratitis and lichen sclerosus.
CD44 may also be related to tumor metastasis formation.
