Target Information
Smooth Muscle Actin belongs to the actin family of proteins, which are highly conserved and play essential roles in cell motility, structure, and integrity.
Alpha, beta, and gamma actin isoforms have been identified:
- Alpha actin: Major component of the contractile apparatus
- Beta and gamma actins: Involved in regulation of cell motility
Smooth muscle actin is an alpha actin found in skeletal muscle and smooth muscle vessel walls, gut wall, myometrium, and myoepithelial cells of breast and salivary glands.
It is involved in filament formation, muscle contraction, and cytokinesis.
Defects in the smooth muscle actin gene can cause familial thoracic aortic aneurysm type 6.
Actin isoforms differ slightly in their N-terminus, with sequences conserved in higher vertebrates.
Alpha-smooth muscle actin is abundant in vascular and visceral smooth muscle cells and also appears in fibroblastic stress fibers during wound healing and fibrocontractive diseases.
Multiple alternatively spliced variants have been identified.
