Target Information
Connexin 43 (Cx43) is a member of the gap junction protein family. Connexins assemble as hexamers and are transported to the plasma membrane to form hemichannels, which connect neighboring cells to create gap junctions. These junctions are crucial for intercellular communication, development, and cell growth regulation. Phosphorylation of Cx43, particularly at Ser368 by protein kinase C (PKC), modulates gap junction assembly and communication. Cx43 is the major gap junction protein in the heart, essential for synchronized cardiac contraction and embryonic development. A related pseudogene, GJA1P, is located on chromosome 5. Mutations in related genes can lead to disorders such as Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease and oculodentodigital dysplasia.
