Target Information
The Drosophila atonal gene encodes a protein with basic helix-loop-helix (bHLH) domains essential for nervous system development. Mammalian atonal homolog 1 (MATH-1), also known as Atoh1, Ath1, or HATH-1, is a 351 amino acid HLH transcription factor homologous to Drosophila atonal. In mice, MATH-1 expression begins around embryonic day 9.5, localizing to cranial ganglia and dorsal CNS regions. By day 18, expression becomes restricted to the external granular layer of the cerebellum and is undetectable in adults. MATH-1 is suggested to regulate neural cell differentiation by activating E box-dependent transcription.
