Target Information
Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and assist in protein synthesis within the mitochondrion. Mitochondrial ribosomes (mitoribosomes) consist of a small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit, with approximately 75% protein to rRNA ratio — the reverse of prokaryotic ribosomes. Unlike prokaryotic ribosomes, mammalian mitoribosomes lack a 5S rRNA. Proteins comprising the mitoribosome vary significantly among species, making sequence homology-based identification difficult. The MRPS7 gene encodes a 28S subunit protein, which in prokaryotes is believed to organize the 3′ domain of the 16S rRNA near the P- and A-sites. Pseudogenes corresponding to MRPS7 are found on chromosomes 8p and 12p.
