Target Information
Cytokeratin 18 (Keratin 18, KRT18, type I cytoskeletal 18) belongs to the acidic subfamily of low molecular weight keratins and forms complexes with cytokeratin 8. It is expressed in epithelial tissues of the gastrointestinal, respiratory, and urogenital tracts, as well as endocrine and exocrine tissues and mesothelial cells. Found primarily in non-squamous epithelia, cytokeratin 18 is present in most adenocarcinomas and ductal carcinomas but absent in squamous cell carcinomas. Hepatocellular carcinomas express only cytokeratins 8 and 18. Mutations in the KRT18 gene are associated with cryptogenic cirrhosis. Two transcript variants encoding the same protein have been identified. Cytokeratin expression patterns aid in distinguishing epithelial malignancies and serve as useful markers in tumor diagnosis, cytopathology, and flow cytometry.
