Target Information
PEDF (Pigment Epithelium-Derived Factor) is a noninhibitory serpin with neurotrophic, anti-angiogenic, and anti-tumorigenic properties. It is a 50 kDa glycoprotein produced and secreted in many tissues throughout the body.
A major component of the anti-angiogenic action of PEDF is the induction of apoptosis in proliferating endothelial cells. PEDF inhibits angiogenic factors such as VEGF and FGF-2.
Its neuroprotective effects result from suppression of neuronal apoptosis induced by peroxide, glutamate, or other neurotoxins.
The lipase-linked receptor PEDF-R binds PEDF with high affinity and is the only known signaling receptor for a serpin family member.
PEDF’s diverse activities make it a potential therapeutic candidate for vasculature-related neurodegenerative diseases such as AMD and PDR, and for angiogenesis-related diseases including certain cancers.
