Target Information
Granulins are a family of secreted, glycosylated peptides cleaved from a single precursor protein with 7.5 repeats of a conserved 12-cysteine granulin/epithelin motif. The 88 kDa precursor protein, progranulin (also known as proepithelin or PC cell-derived growth factor), produces mature granulin after signal peptide cleavage. These can be further processed into active 6 kDa peptides (granulin A, B, C, etc.). Epithelins 1 and 2 correspond to granulins A and B. Granulin proteins regulate cell growth and may act as stimulators, inhibitors, or both, depending on the member. They play roles in development, wound healing, and tumorigenesis.
