Methylglutaconyl-CoA hydratase (AUH) is a mitochondrial protein that binds to AU-rich elements (AREs) commonly found in the 3′ UTR of rapidly decaying mRNAs such as c-fos, c-myc, and granulocyte/macrophage colony-stimulating factor. These ARE elements promote RNA degradation and deadenylation.

AUH shares homology with enoyl-CoA hydratase, an enzyme involved in fatty acid metabolism, and exhibits intrinsic hydratase activity. It functions as a bifunctional protein with both RNA-binding and metabolic roles. The mouse homolog, sharing 92% identity with the human protein, localizes to mitochondria, suggesting AUH may act as a mitochondrial AU-binding protein. Human AUH is expressed as a single 1.8 kb mRNA, producing a 40 kDa precursor that is processed into a 32 kDa mature form.
