Background
Olfactory receptor family 1 subfamily D member 5 (OR1D5) is a human olfactory receptor that interacts with odorant molecules in the nose, initiating neuronal responses that trigger the perception of smell. These receptors belong to the G-protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) family, characterized by a 7-transmembrane domain structure shared with many neurotransmitter and hormone receptors. They are responsible for odorant recognition and signal transduction via G proteins. The olfactory receptor gene family is the largest in the human genome, and its nomenclature is organism-specific (RefSeq, Jul 2008).
