Background
Olfactory receptor family 3 subfamily A member 3 (OR3A3) is a human olfactory receptor that interacts with odorant molecules in the nose to initiate neuronal responses leading to the perception of smell. These receptors belong to the large family of G-protein-coupled receptors (GPCR) derived from single coding-exon genes. Olfactory receptors share a 7-transmembrane domain structure with many neurotransmitter and hormone receptors and mediate odorant signal transduction via G proteins. The olfactory receptor gene family is the largest in the human genome. The nomenclature for olfactory receptor genes and proteins in humans is independent of other organisms. (RefSeq, Jul 2008)
