Background
This gene encodes a chromatin-associated enzyme, poly(ADP-ribosyl)transferase, which modifies various nuclear proteins by poly(ADP-ribosyl)ation.
The modification is DNA-dependent and is involved in the regulation of important cellular processes such as differentiation, proliferation, and tumor transformation, as well as the recovery of cells from DNA damage.
Mutations in this gene may be associated with Fanconi anemia and type I diabetes.
