Background
This gene belongs to the protocadherin alpha gene cluster, one of three related clusters on chromosome 5 with unique genomic organization similar to B-cell and T-cell receptor gene clusters.
The alpha cluster comprises 15 cadherin superfamily genes (13 highly similar and 2 distantly related). Each gene includes large N-terminal exons encoding six cadherin ectodomains and shared C-terminal exons encoding the cytoplasmic domain.
These neural cadherin-like adhesion proteins are integral membrane proteins that likely play critical roles in establishing and maintaining specific neuronal connections in the brain.
Alternative splicing has been observed, and additional variants may exist but their full-length sequences remain undetermined. (RefSeq, Jul 2008)
