Background
This gene belongs to the protocadherin gamma gene cluster, one of three related clusters located on chromosome five. These clusters exhibit an immunoglobulin-like organization, suggesting unique regulation and expression mechanisms. The gamma cluster includes 22 genes divided into three subfamilies:
- Subfamily A: 12 genes
- Subfamily B: 7 genes and 2 pseudogenes
- Subfamily C: 3 genes
Each variable region exon encodes the extracellular domain with 6 cadherin ectodomains and a transmembrane region, while constant region exons encode the common cytoplasmic region. These neural cadherin-like adhesion proteins are likely crucial for specific cell-cell connections in the brain. Alternative splicing has been observed in gamma cluster genes.
