Background
The protein encoded by this gene is an antioxidant enzyme belonging to the peroxiredoxin family, localized mainly in the cytoplasm. Peroxidases of this family reduce hydrogen peroxide and alkyl hydroperoxides to water and alcohol using thiol-containing donor molecules as reducing equivalents. This protein is known to play a regulatory role in the activation of the transcription factor NF-kappaB.
