Background
The protein encoded by this gene is a member of the pregnancy-specific glycoprotein (PSG) family, which belongs to the immunoglobulin superfamily along with the carcinoembryonic antigen cell adhesion molecule (CEACAM) family. These genes are organized as a large cluster. The PSG9 protein is believed to inhibit platelet-fibrinogen interactions. Reduced PSG serum levels are associated with fetal growth restrictions, while up-regulation has been observed in colorectal cancers. Several pseudogenes exist on chromosome 19, and alternative splicing generates multiple isoforms.
