Target Information
PUM1 (Pumilio homolog 1) is a sequence-specific RNA-binding protein that acts as a post-transcriptional repressor by binding the 3'-UTR of mRNA targets. It belongs to the PUF family of evolutionarily conserved RNA-binding proteins.
PUM1 binds to the Pumilio Response Element (PRE, 5'-UGUANAUA-3'), related to the Nanos Response Element (NRE), and mediates post-transcriptional repression through recruitment of the CCR4-POP2-NOT deadenylase complex, leading to translational inhibition and mRNA degradation.
Mutations in the PUM1 gene can cause spinocerebellar ataxia 47.
