Target Information
Fatty acid binding proteins (FABP) are small (approximately 13–14 kDa) intracellular proteins with high tissue specificity. FABPs bind long-chain fatty acids and are abundant in various cell types, playing an important role in intracellular fatty acid utilization.
There are at least six distinct types of FABP, each showing specific tissue expression patterns. Due to their small size, FABPs rapidly leak from damaged or dying cells, leading to increased serum levels. Liver FABP serves as a sensitive marker for liver cell damage both in vitro and in vivo. Damaged tissues typically show reduced FABP presence, aiding histological identification. Additionally, liver FABP is useful for detecting hepatocyte lysis in toxicology assays and monitoring liver damage during or after transplantation.
