Target Information
The proteasome is a multicatalytic proteinase complex with a highly ordered ring-shaped 20S core structure composed of 4 rings of 28 non-identical subunits: 2 rings of 7 alpha subunits and 2 rings of 7 beta subunits. Proteasomes are widely distributed throughout eukaryotic cells and cleave peptides in an ATP/ubiquitin-dependent process within a non-lysosomal pathway.
A modified form, the immunoproteasome, plays an essential role in processing class I MHC peptides. The gene encoding LMP2 belongs to the proteasome B-type (T1B) family and is located in the class II region of the MHC. Proteolytic processing is required to generate a mature subunit.
