Target Information
Histones are basic nuclear proteins responsible for the nucleosome structure of eukaryotic chromosomal fiber. Two molecules of each core histone (H2A, H2B, H3, and H4) form an octamer around which approximately 146 bp of DNA is wrapped, forming nucleosomes. The linker histone H1 interacts with linker DNA between nucleosomes, contributing to chromatin compaction. HIST1H2BC encodes a replication-dependent histone H2B variant with antibacterial and antifungal activity. The gene is intronless, lacks a polyA tail, and is located in the large histone gene cluster on chromosome 6.
