Target Information
Many vertebrate homeobox-containing genes have been identified based on their similarity to Drosophila developmental genes. Members of the Dlx gene family contain a homeobox related to that of Distal-less (Dll), a gene expressed in the head and limbs of developing fruit flies.
The Distal-less (Dlx) family includes at least six members (DLX1–DLX6). DLX proteins are thought to play roles in forebrain and craniofacial development. Three transcript variants have been described for this gene, though one remains incompletely characterized. Studies indicate that one isoform represses beta-globin gene expression, while another lacks this function.
