It plays a crucial role in stem cell formation and maintenance. Expression of POU5F1 along with Sox2, Klf4, Lin28, and c-Myc enables the generation of induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells from fibroblasts. These iPS cells can be created without viral vectors, improving safety for potential regenerative medicine applications.
